92-year-old Peter Minter has spent a large part of his life living and working at the Bulmer brickyard on the Essex-Suffolk border. This small business, in the family since 1936, is now one of the last places keeping heritage brick crafts alive, as other brickyards have gradually shut down or moved to mechanical processes, and brickmaking has now appeared on the Red List of Endangered Crafts. As a result, the yard has gradually specialised in repair, conservation and restoration projects across the UK, for the National Trust, English Heritage, and Historic Royal Palaces, but just as proudly for smaller private work undertaken for individuals. 

This book uses photographs taken ‘on the job’ to provide examples of the range and beauty that can be found in our building landscape, as well as highlighting common problems Peter has seen as a brickmaker. It can be used in the same way as a ‘Spotter's Guide’ for those with a general interest in the topic, or as a technical resource for professionals in the industry who may need a brickmaker’s perspective.
